The first step is usually deciding on a species of wood that will fit your home and your lifestyle. Grain patterns, texture and coloring are among the many options that might affect your choice. You will want to consider other things about the material, such as durability, grade and width.
Different species of wood used for hardwood flooring are rated by the Janka Hardness Scale (attach chart). This will give you an idea how normal foot traffic and wear will affect your hardwood floor.
The grading of flooring allows you to finds several different appearances within the same type of wood flooring. A Select Grade floor tends to be very uniform in color, grain and texture. Each board is hand selected for its matching characteristics. A #1 Grade floor has a little bit more variety in color and grain, but knots and wormholes are few. A #2 Grade floor is quite a bit more colorful and tends to have a lot of small, tight knots (which are usually filled with wood filler). A Rustic floor is chosen for its large knots (usually left open or partially filled), random coloring and unique board markings.
The widths of the boards are another option that can change the appearance of a hardwood floor. A Strip floor usually comes in widths of 2 1/4” to 4” in 1’ to 8’ lengths. A Plank floor contains widths of over 4” and is usually a Long Length material with a 10’ average length board.
